A group of volunteers is once again preparing to break out the bunting and dust off the doilies, as Towngate in Guiseley prepares to host another fundraising street party on Sunday 25 June.
The event, St Oswald’s Street Party, will consist of an afternoon of fun in Towngate with stalls, food and entertainment, all to raise money for the Guiseley Lights Appeal.
Organisers are delighted to have Manning Stainton as a main event sponsor, and thank other local businesses for their offers of support. Help is still needed, either as main sponsors or by providing prizes for the raffle.
Following the success of the fundraising events in 2016, members of the organising committee are in the process of formally establishing Guiseley Lights Charitable Trust, to build on the fundraising efforts and ensure the Guiseley community has even more festive lights in 2017 and beyond.
St Oswald’s Street Party will have an even bigger array of stalls and fun rides for visitors, and a bigger, dedicated food and drinks area. The stage will play host to a variety of performers including singers, bands and dance acts.
Also at the event, the newly formed community arts company Codswallop CIC, based in Guiseley, will be bringing mayhem to the party with live actors challenging innocent bystanders to duels; a creative and historic mission, in the form of a treasure trail, set by St Oswald himself; as well as helping young ‘saints’ create their own cardboard armour at their Creation Station.
As well as the family fun, Codswallop will be responsible for a reminiscent exhibition, displayed in the church its self, looking at who St Oswald was and the history of the local ‘St Oswald’s Pageants’ which took place every year until the mid-1900s. Those who remember can add their memories to this, which will then be on display prior to the Tales Told Festival, looking at the wider history of Aireborough.
The organisers are still appealing for sponsors and stall holders for the event, and inviting expressions of interest for anyone who would like to perform on the entertainment stage at the event. The fun starts at 12:00 and will end at 6pm.
